I play a mix of both types! Sometimes, a hybrid set-up works wonders, with single-ply on top for resonance and double-ply on the bottom for projection. The best of both worlds!
That makes a lot of sense, albertmorrow! If you experiment, what patterns do you find emerge between the hybrid setup and full sets of the same ply?
What about texture? The smooth feel of a coated single-ply can add a completely different character to your jazz vibe! It can help achieve that ‘vintage’ sound, don’t you think?
Absolutely, twebb! Coated heads can warm up the sound beautifully. But, can they be too mellow for more aggressive styles of jazz?
I had a friend who swore by clear heads for their brightness. While coated heads bring warmth, clear heads project sound so sharply. It’s a mixed bag, really.
Mixed feelings for sure! Have you tried them yourself, arichardson? What was your experience like?
I can’t help but think that picking the right heads is like choosing ice cream flavors. Everyone has their favorite, but it seems no one agrees on the best! Anyone else feel overwhelmed?
Totally relatable, samantha95! Sometimes I feel like I’d need an entire drum shop to find my perfect head combo!
At the end of the day, experimentation is key. I’ve tried dozens, and often, it’s about finding what suits your unique style and drum kit. Jazz is so personal!
I’m really into bebop and have had great experiences with Remo Ambassador heads. They give a crisp sound that’s ideal for the fast tempos of bebop.
I agree, but for fusion, I prefer Evans G2 heads. They really balance attack and sustain, perfect for complex rhythms.
I’ve tried several heads, but for smooth jazz, I keep coming back to Aquarian Classic Clear heads. They have a warm tone and blend well with other instruments.
Sounds interesting! I usually go for Remo Vintage A heads for a warmer vibe, especially in smooth jazz settings.
For bebop drummers, I’d definitely recommend trying the Attack Drumheads. I found they really help emphasize snare response in fast pieces.
That’s good to know! Any thoughts on their durability? I tend to play aggressively with a lot of rim shots.
I’ve used the Attack heads too. While great for light playing, for more aggressive styles, you might want to stick with something like Evans MX2, which holds up better.
Totally agree! I wish I could find something versatile enough for both jazz and rock.
Have you tried mixing head types? I sometimes use a coated top with a clear bottom for versatility. Could work well for blending genres!
That’s a fun idea! I should experiment a bit. Do you have specific combinations to recommend?
For fusion, I’ve found that a clear resonance head with a coated batter head gives incredible depth to the sound. Perfect for layered textures!
