What are the best strings for a Les Paul?

My Preferences

I usually play rock and metal, so I’m looking for something that will hold up to aggressive playing. Here are a few questions I have that I’m hoping you all can help me with:

  • What gauge do you recommend? I’ve heard that heavier gauges can provide more sustain but might be a bit tougher on the fingers.
  • Any specific brands that you swear by? I’ve seen a lot of talk about brands like Ernie Ball, D’Addario, and Fender, but I’m not sure which ones really shine on a Les Paul.
  • Have any of you experimented with coated strings? I’ve read they can last longer but might affect the tone.

I think it’s a matter of getting used to them! Heavy gauges do provide a beefier tone, but can be a workout for bends. Gotta love those full chords, though.

Coated strings definitely have their advantages! I’ve used Elixir strings and they can really prolong the life of your strings.
