Looking for Recommendations on Studio Monitors with Subwoofers

As someone who’s been diving into music production, I’m on the hunt for studio monitors that either come with a subwoofer or can easily be paired with one. The low-end response in my current setup lacks the punch I need when mixing tracks, and after reading some reviews, it seems like having a dedicated sub could make a world of difference.

What I’m Looking For

I’m particularly interested in:

  • Quality: I’ve heard that not all studio monitors are created equal, especially when it comes to low frequencies. Recommendations for reputable brands would be great.
  • Budget: I’m trying not to break the bank here. Ideally, I’m looking for options under $800.
  • Acoustic Space: My studio is pretty modest in size, so monitors that perform well in smaller rooms would be ideal.

Some Options I’ve Considered

I’ve stumbled upon a few options:

  1. KRK Rokit 5 G4 - I’ve read mixed reviews about the bass response.
  2. Yamaha HS8 with HS8S Subwoofer - Seems solid but a bit pricey.
  3. JBL 305P MkII with a Sub - Great features, but does anyone know how the integration works?

Questions for the Community

  • What’s your experience with integrating a subwoofer with studio monitors?
  • Are there specific models you’d recommend?
  • Any tips on placement or calibration for getting the best sound?

Looking forward to your thoughts and recommendations!

I recently upgraded to the KRK Rokit 5 G4 paired with the KRK 10S2 subwoofer. The sound quality is impressive for hip-hop and electronic music. The sub really rounds out the low end, making mixes much more powerful!

I’ve heard great things about the KRK setup too! But do you think it’s suitable for classical music? I’m concerned about the sound fidelity.

For classical, I’d recommend the Yamaha HS8 monitors with the HS8S sub. The clarity is outstanding, which is crucial for detailed mixing. I’ve been using them for a year, and they excel in all genres!

I second the Yamaha HS8! I switched from JBLs, and the difference in sound staging is remarkable. Plus, they don’t tire me out during long sessions. Highly recommend.

Can anyone compare the HS8 with the Genelec 8040B? I’ve been eyeing them for a while but need some user feedback!

The Genelecs are fantastic! They deliver an incredibly accurate sound. They might be pricey, but if you’re serious about production, they’re worth it. I use them for rock and pop genres primarily.

While the Genelecs are excellent, I’ve had mixed feelings about their pricing. You can get great results with more affordable options like the JBL 305P MkII and a budget sub. Just depends on your needs!

True! That being said, does anyone use a subwoofer with the JBL 305P? How does it change the sound for different music?

I use the JBL 305P with a KRK 10S2. The difference in bass response is dramatic! It tightens up the low end, enhancing genres like EDM. Just be cautious with room placement to avoid muddiness.

It’s amazing how room treatment can affect sound. I once set up my monitors without any acoustic panels, and it was like mixing in a cave! Anyone else had that realization?

Haha, yes! I learned that the hard way too. Now I have foam panels, and it made a world of difference. What’s your preferred setup now?

I ended up with a 5.1 surround setup at home! It’s overkill for mixing, but it’s great for tracking film scores. Just have to balance everything right to avoid overwhelming myself. Lol.

I’m currently using a pair of KRK Rokit monitors with a subwoofer, and I can’t stress enough how crucial placement is. Keeping the monitors away from corners really helps to reduce unwanted bass overload.

Absolutely! I also use isolation pads. They really improve clarity by minimizing vibrations to my desk.

I struggled with setting up my Yamaha HS monitors with a sub initially. Calibration software made a massive difference. It helps to get the crossover settings right.

I agree! Another tip is to use a measurement mic for precise adjustments. It’s a game changer for mixing!

Placement is key, but so is getting the right balance. My subwoofer was drowning out my mids until I adjusted the volume and distance.

That’s a common issue! Make sure to experiment with the phase settings too; it can really help with clarity.

Something I learned the hard way – don’t overlook acoustic treatment in your room. It can drastically improve the integration of monitors and subwoofers.
